Affirmation of Baptism and Naming Ceremony

Welcome in the name of God,

who creates, saves, and calls us

with grace that lasts forever. Amen.

We are dreamed and formed by a God

who is not qualified by our language or limitations,

who has declared the generous identity:

I am who I am.

We are claimed and loved by a God

who does not conform,

who cannot be contained,

who delights in your holy life

and self-expression still unfolding.

We trust that the Holy Spirit has gathered

this community to embody

the love, safety, and joy

God desires for your mind, body, and soul —

on earth and in heaven.

You are made in God’s own image,

worthy of dignity, belonging, and purpose

through Jesus the Christ,

who transforms all things for good.

In baptism, you were joined

to the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Your humanity was claimed

in the name of the Triune God,

and the people promised to remind you that

while the world will call you by many names,

your first and forever name is Beloved.

We honor you, Beloved Child of God.

The person affirming their baptism

might share about the name

they have chosen to recognize in this assembly.

[Name], we affirm your baptismal promises,

your identity as a beloved child of God,

and the Spirit’s transformational presence in your life.

[Name], you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit

and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

A baptismal sponsor or chosen family member

may light the baptismal candle from the Christ candle.

You are radiant, made in God’s own image.

You are the light of the world.

You are a city on a hill, so shine where you are.

God of life, in Jesus you have known the fullness

of our human experience. You were born into human flesh,

into the spectrum of earthly love and fear,

our limitations and longings. Bless [name]

with dignity, belonging, and purpose from heaven.

Pour out your Holy Spirit upon [name];

the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of counsel and might,

the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord,

the spirit of joy in your presence. Amen.
